AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria recorded 244 new first-time asylum applications, marking the lowest monthly total in a decade. This figure represents a decrease of approximately 65% from 697 applications in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When combining first and subsequent applications, the total asylum filings for July reached 840. These latest statistics highlight a significant downward trend in asylum requests across Austria during the first seven months of the year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received 5,743 asylum applications, a reduction from 10,442 during the same period in 2025, which indicates roughly a 45% decline from the previous year. The reported totals encompass various types of applications, whereas the 244 figure for July specifically refers to initial claims. The Austrian authorities publish monthly asylum data that distinguish between new claims and repeat filings to provide a clearer overview.

Syrian nationals filed 267 asylum applications in July, making them the most numerous nationality group for that month. The ministry noted that most of those Syrian requests involved children born in Austria rather than newly arrived individuals. Austria has also continued to enforce restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases in Returns and Border Detentions

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria reported more departures than initial asylum requests. By July’s end, 8,856 individuals had left the country through voluntary or enforced removals, including 4,615 forced removals and 4,241 voluntary departures. Additionally, authorities completed 392 transfers under the EU’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing specific asylum claims among member states.

Border apprehensions in Burgenland, located in eastern Austria, have also declined compared to previous years. From January through mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a significant drop from nearly 16,000 over the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry attributed the decrease to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Austrian police have actively participated in Operation Fox, a joint effort targeting migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings.

2026 Asylum Figures Continue to Drop

The July data reflects ongoing declines seen in asylum numbers during the first half of 2026. Austria registered approximately 5,000 asylum applications over that six-month span, with departures surpassing incoming claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these figures as part of the government’s latest migration statistics. Austria has also persisted with voluntary return initiatives for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving the country in July, according to official data.

The latest figures clearly indicate a year-on-year decline in both initial and overall asylum applications. July’s 244 first-time claims represented the lowest point in a decade as highlighted by government data, while the total for the month reached 840. The total from January to July, 5,743 applications, remains significantly below 2025 levels. Austrian authorities continue to publish detailed monthly reports on asylum and migration, including separate statistics for applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
