Austria Suffers Record July Temperatures and Economic Losses of €1.4 Billion

WIESELBURG, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria experienced its highest temperature ever recorded in July on the 31st, with Wieselburg reaching 40.3 degrees Celsius. This surpasses the previous July record of 39.7 degrees, set in Dellach im Drautal in 1983. GeoSphere Austria verified this new monthly peak amid a heatwave primarily affecting eastern regions of the nation. The country’s absolute temperature record remains 40.5 degrees, registered at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in August 2013.

Austria records 40.3C July heat and €1.4bn losses
Austria’s 40.3C July record came during a prolonged period of severe heat.

The July temperature milestone followed a June characterized by widespread and persistent extreme heat. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 out of 277 weather stations registered new maximum temperatures for June, with 66 stations also reporting their highest temperatures ever recorded in any month. On June 28, Vienna reached 40.0 degrees, and the next day, Bad Deutsch-Altenburg hit 40.1 degrees. Multiple low-lying areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic losses caused by the June and late July heatwaves amounted to approximately €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate accounts for health impacts, reduced productivity, damage to agriculture, strain on infrastructure, and increased cooling demands. It also considers effects on ecosystems and public services. This figure does not represent an official government assessment or an insured-loss total, as insurance data only captures damages covered by active policies.

Heatwave intensity exceeds previous Austrian records

Using area-degree days, which combine heat intensity, duration, and geographic extent, the Wegener Center measured the events. Their calculations indicated about 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave, while the late July episode ranged between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s former benchmark was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached approximately 22,100 area-degree days across regions below 1,500 meters elevation.

The intense temperatures also coincided with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety estimates that 395 deaths in June 2026 were linked to heat, marking the highest June total since the agency started tracking this data. Heat-related mortality reflects an increase in deaths above expected levels during unusually hot periods, without necessarily requiring heat to be the sole cause on death certificates.

Prolonged drought conditions worsen due to lack of rainfall

The heatwave followed several months of notably dry weather across Austria. From January 1 to July 27, total rainfall measured approximately 426 millimeters, well below the long-term average of 609 millimeters for that period, indicating a shortfall of nearly 30%. Authorities characterized the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable stretch since at least the early 1900s. Significant rainfall deficits were observed in Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland.

Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunshine, and minimal precipitation increased evaporation rates during late spring and summer. These conditions diminished soil moisture and heightened stress on crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies. Climate records reveal that Austria has experienced more frequent, longer, and hotter heatwaves over recent decades. During these periods, average maximum temperatures have risen by about three degrees between the 1980s and the 2020s. The new July temperature record underscores Austria’s ongoing trend of escalating extreme heat.
