MOSCOW / RankWire.AI / – During the initial six months of 2026, Russia welcomed 2.5 million international travelers, reflecting a 20.1% increase compared to the same period last year. China continued to be the leading source of these visitors, making up over 22% of all foreign arrivals. These recent statistics underscore the upward trend in Russia’s inbound tourism from January through June. Nikita Kondratiev, a senior official at the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, shared these tourism insights at meetings held in Shenyang, China.

Russia draws 2.5 million foreign tourists in first half 2026
Russia’s foreign tourism market grew in early 2026, with China leading inbound travel.

The figures derive from official tourism reports that include foreign visitors staying in collective accommodation facilities across Russia. Additionally, Rosstat data indicated Russians made 43.2 million domestic trips during the first half of 2026, representing a 4.3% growth compared to the same period in 2025. Consequently, inbound tourism grew at a quicker rate annually than domestic tourism, based on the separate official metrics used for each category.

China remained the dominant source market for foreign visitors to Russia during the first half of the year. Other significant sources included travelers from Persian Gulf nations, Turkey, and India. Tourists from abroad also explored destinations beyond Moscow and St. Petersburg, such as Murmansk, Vladivostok, and Kazan. Official Russian reports also confirm direct international air routes connecting 34 locations, including several Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

China Continues to Lead in Russia’s Foreign Visitor Market

The latest tourism statistics were presented at a Tourism Council meeting of the Greater Tumen Initiative in Shenyang. Attendees also participated in a seminar focused on inbound tourism in Northeast Asia, discussing cross-border travel initiatives involving Russia, China, and Mongolia. One such project is the development of the historic Great Tea Road tourism route, which has progressed into the implementation phase and is set to encompass approximately 20 Russian regions.

The Russian segment of the Great Tea Road is planned to extend from the Far East and Siberia through the Urals and Volga region, ultimately reaching Moscow and St. Petersburg. Other tourism initiatives discussed included connectivity between Blagoveshchensk and Heihe, tourism expansion around Vladivostok, as well as the Trans-Siberian Railway, Lake Baikal, and scientific tourism linked to the Vostochny Cosmodrome.

Visa Policies Between Russia and China Are Relaxing as Travel Rises

With increasing visitor numbers, travel regulations between Russia and China have been modified. Russia has extended visa-free entry for eligible Chinese citizens through Dec. 31, 2027, while China has similarly extended its visa-free arrangements for Russian nationals until the same date. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, ordinary Russian passport holders can stay up to 30 days without a visa for purposes including tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, and transit.

The first-half figures are part of a larger trend of growing cross-border travel. Chinese official data indicates that 154,200 Chinese tourists visited Russia in the first quarter of 2026, marking a 44% year-on-year increase. Russia ranked second among China’s inbound visitor origins during the first half. These figures position China at the top of Russia’s foreign tourism market, accounting for more than one-fifth of all international visitors recorded.
