CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Apple has launched the iPhone Duo, marking its debut in foldable smartphone technology. Starting at $1,999 in the U.S., the device was unveiled on September 9 at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino. CEO John Ternus introduced the new model as part of the latest hardware lineup, with preorders opening on October 16 across more than 70 countries and regions. The initial units are expected to be available to consumers and in stores starting October 23.

Designed in a book-style format, the iPhone Duo features two Super Retina XDR displays. When the device remains closed, a 5.4-inch screen manages typical phone functions. Opening the device reveals a larger 7.6-inch interior display suitable for video, applications, gaming, and multitasking. The device’s housing is crafted from Grade 5 titanium, and the hinge mechanism comprises over 100 components. Additionally, it bears an IP68 certification for splash, water, and dust resistance.

Apple has modified its mobile software to optimize the use of the expanded foldable display. The iPhone Duo will be shipped with iOS 27.1, which introduces features specifically designed for this new screen format. Users are able to position two apps side by side and save favorite app pairings. When open, the phone can display two Home Screen pages simultaneously. Biometric authentication is available via Touch ID integrated into the side button, usable in either configuration.

The rear camera setup includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main camera offers a 2x optical telephoto option of professional quality and supports zero shutter lag. Users can preview selfies taken with the rear camera on the external display before capturing the shot. Duo Preview feature allows subjects to see the frame while another person controls the camera. The main camera is capable of recording 4K video at up to 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision.

Powered by Apple’s A20 Pro processor and a dual-battery architecture, the foldable iPhone includes a custom vapor chamber for heat management during intensive tasks. Apple estimates up to 31 hours of video playback when relying on the inner display, increasing to 44 hours when using the outer screen. The device supports fast wired and wireless charging, as well as Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity options.

Pricing details and availability in over 70 markets starting in October

The iPhone Duo will be available with storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Customers can select from star white and night sky finishes. In the United States, the starting price is $1,999, while in the UAE, it begins at AED 8,499. Preorders will start one week before the device’s official release, which is set for October 23. On October 30, Apple plans to extend sales to an additional 28 countries and regions. The device is exclusively eSIM-based worldwide, eliminating physical SIM cards.

The introduction of the iPhone Duo positions Apple firmly within the foldable smartphone market, combining unique hardware and software features. Its design pairs a compact external screen with the largest display ever placed on an iPhone. The device integrates Apple’s processors, camera systems, connectivity technologies, and mobile OS into a foldable format. Customers can expect to receive the first units approximately six weeks after the September reveal. The October launch signifies the commercial debut of Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone.
