VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the final stages of preparing BEACONSAT, the nation’s inaugural military satellite and its most substantial domestically built spacecraft to date. Designed to identify and examine disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems like GPS and Galileo, the satellite is scheduled for launch in February 2027 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project aims to detect jamming and spoofing signals from orbit while collecting data on when and where navigation systems are compromised.

Serving as a technological proof of concept, BEACONSAT is part of a multi-year research and development initiative. Jamming refers to radio interference that obstructs or weakens satellite navigation signals, whereas spoofing involves transmitting false navigation data to mislead receivers. Leading the BEACONSAT project is GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology company responsible for the overall mission. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in space. For this mission, the company supplies the propulsion unit, satellite structure, and thermal management systems. GATE Space has successfully conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Technology Developed by Austrian Firm Drives Satellite Mission
Several European companies contribute essential components to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN provides high-precision technology for detecting and analyzing GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite parts, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency is providing support and co-financing via its ESA Marketplace program, which focuses on technology demonstrations. This initiative enables commercially available space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Officials from Austria describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than a standalone operational satellite program. The data collected will focus on interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit, contributing to the Defence Ministry’s efforts as Austria advances its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT Integrates into Austria’s Expanding Space Strategy
Austria’s Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit responsible for satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT forms part of this developing framework, specifically targeting navigation signal interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions expanding the Austrian Armed Forces’ role from merely using space services to actively operating space infrastructure and systems. This strategy was adopted in 2023, with implementation plans extending through 2035 and beyond.
The planned launch in February 2027, with a Falcon 9 rocket, remains on schedule. Post-deployment, the satellite will continue to gather and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research function. The project unites Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and specialized European technology firms. BEACONSAT will mark Austria’s debut in military satellite missions while testing domestically developed systems aimed at monitoring disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
